Brendan Furman Wins Cadet Division

May 2, 2015 – East Stroudsburg, PA

After a 6-2 decision over Buffalo’s Michael Silvis in the quarters and a 9-4 decision over Army’s Rocco Caywood, Pitt’s Ryan Solomon (97kg) wrestled 2010 NCAA Champion and former Iowa State Cyclone David Zabriskie in the finals. Ryan was able to compete on his feet and scored 2 push out points but Zabriskie’s freestyle experience showed on the mat as he scored 8 points off of 2 gut wrenches en route to a 12-2 tech fall. Ryan came up one match short of qualifying for the World Team Trials as the champion of the NE Regional automatically quailed for the trials.

Dom Forys (65kg) wrestled up from his season weight of 125 to 143 and scored 3 tech falls before falling to Minnesota’s 2010 NCAA Champion Jayson Ness.

Mikey Racciato (70kg), Ben Ross (65kg), Nathan Russell (74kg), and Nick Zanetta (65kg) also competed at the event.

In the Cadet Division, Brendan Furman (285lbs) of Canon McMillan went 3-0 with 2 pins and a tech on his way to first place. The NE Regional title comes only a few weeks after a Tournament of Champions title. Brendan is putting in a very productive off season so far.

Canon Mac teammate Camden Fontenot (132lbs) went 5-1 to finish 3rd with his only loss coming to Vitali Arujau of NY.

By finishing in the top 3, both Brendan and Cam qualify for the Cadet National Championships in Fargo, ND later this summer.
